Rhythm 'n' Blues Queen
Ruth Brown
in Tarrytown

Saturday, May 22 at 8 P.M., The Music Hall, 12 Main Street, Tarrytown, NY

Ruth BrownJazz Forum Arts presents legendary R & B vocalist Ruth Brown and her six-piece band in concert on Saturday, May 22, 1999 at 8 PM at the historic 1885 Music Hall, 13 Main Street, Tarrytown, NY.
The original queen of rhythm 'n' blues has been on a remarkable roll for several years. In addition to her usual appearances on records and in nightclubs, Ruth Brown has also been racking up awards for her recently published autobiography, her work in film, on television and radio, and on the Broadway stage. The "girl with the tear in her voice" has just released her latest album, "R + B = Ruth Brown," on Bullseye Blues, and will be performing material from that and from her forthcoming release on Rounder entitled, "It's A Good Day For The Blues."
Born in Virginia, and initially inspired by Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, and Sarah Vaughn, Ruth Brown began her singing career with the Lucky Millinder Big Band. By 1950, she was recording big hits like "Teardrops From My Eyes" and "Mama, He Treats Your Daughter Mean" for Atlantic Records, making Ruth Brown the biggest selling black female recording artist in the music industry from 1951 to 1954. During the 1960's, she maintained a lower profile, returning to ballads and jazz, her first love. In the 1970's, Ruth Brown began acting in films and on television, and by the late 1980's, she had a starring role in the Broadway musical "Black and Blue" for which she won a Tony award. Her 1989 album "Blues on Broadway" won a Grammy award and shortly thereafter Ruth was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her recent autobiography, "Miss Rhythm," published in 1996, won the 1997 Ralph Gleason Music Book Award for Excellence in Music Literature.
