Jazz Forum Arts presents legendary jazz performer, "The Cat in the Hat" Gato Barbieri, noted for his unique and immediately identifiable sound. The Saxophonist and Latin/Contemporary jazz icon, known for his Oscar-winning score to Bertolucci's "Last Tango In Paris."

Argentinian tenor saxophonist Gato Barbieri has been at the forefront of contemporary Latin Jazz for years. He performs hits like "Europa" as well as music from his recent "Que Pasa" recording and will undoubtedly play material from his latest CD, "The Shadow of the Cat."

Gato Barbieri, born in 1932 in Rosario, Argentina, started on clarinet, then studied alto sax, and switched to tenor sax at age 20. Instead of playing tango, the primary music of his homeland, he became the top jazz musician in Argentina, working with Dizzy Gillespie's pianist and arranger Lalo Schifrin, as well as leading his own groups. After establishing himself as an avant-garde player in the 60's, Barbieri shifted to a musical rediscovery of his South American roots.
